Passage Response

If there is any type of abstract film I love watching, it is an experimental film with a whole bunch of colors.  My first initial thought while viewing Barbel Neubauer’s film Passage was, I love colors! I really loved the animation of the shapes that were put into this film.  I loved how the colors looked like fireworks that were a variety of shapes and sizes. A few seconds into the film and I started to be reminded of Harry Smith’s film Early Abstractions.  I felt like I was seeing some similarities between shapes and the way that they moved.  Watching the way the music correlated with the movements of the shapes was pretty amusing and fun.  I really like the way the shapes and the music was put together.  I felt like I was being taken into different scenes all at once or at least very rapidly.  At one moment I felt as if I was surrounded by screeching exotic animals in Africa or the performance of bongos and similar percussions being played.  All of a sudden I felt like I was in a completely different moment.  Only this time, I felt like I was listening to a jazz concert that was at an extreme fast pace.  The shapes danced and the triangles looked like they were flying through the air like spaceships.  When all of the dancing that the shapes do to the jazz music was happening, it kind of reminded of the scene in Flubber when Flubber was dancing all around the house in disco lights with all of the shapes of lights dancing on the walls.  I would find it very cool if I could learn how experimental filmmakers such as Barbel Neubauer and Harry Smith make their animated films with cool distorted colors and shapes.  It must be cool to be able to master such a complicating art process.  This is one of the main reasons why I am looking forward to this class.  I am very excited about being able to process film as I feel it is a good step in progress to better my experience with actual celluloid film.  Using the first class to be exposed to this type of experimental filmmaking was really fun.  I am excited that this class will seem to be very hands on and help better my film creativity.  I think it would be fun to incorporate these abstract shapes and colors into a narrative film somehow by maybe portraying these shapes and colors taking place as someone’s mind process.
